December 10, 2024
was a sea day, so I had a chance to walk around the ship. Christmas decorations
were being put up in the atrium and along the stair handrails.
Have you noticed
the Christmas cushions? They were made in Italy and were only allowed to stay
in the atrium area. I would definitely have taken one back to my stateroom if
it had been allowed.
One floor above
the atrium were the shops, and there was a Christmas tree displayed in front of
them.
I enjoyed walking
alone along the promenade. Occasionally, performances were held there. Since
MSC is a European company, watching the show made me feel like I was surrounded
by a European atmosphere.
Have you noticed
the long LED dome overhead? It displayed dynamic digital art and scenery that
made the performances even more inspiring.
The Jean-Philippe chocolate shop, located on the promenade, showcased beautiful chocolate artworks.
Some of the chocolates were for sale—I bought two as gifts and hoped they tasted good.
Because MSC was
founded in Italy by an Italian family, their gelato must be authentic. There
were 16 flavours to choose from.
Breakfast for the
next morning on December 11, 2024. Almost every day I had dates—they were
delicious and should be healthy.
The Abu Dhabi
cruise terminal, located at Zayed Port, is about 34 km from the city center.
MSC provided shuttle buses at EUR 10 for adults and EUR 8 for children, which
felt a bit pricey.

Big Bus
approached us, and payment could be charged directly to our MSC account. If I
remember correctly, they offered a deal: 1 day Abu Dhabi + 2 days Dubai for the
price of 1 day Abu Dhabi + 1 day Dubai (total EUR 140 per person). For
convenience in both transportation and payment, we accepted the deal.

Big Bus had two
routes:
- Green Line — Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
- Red Line — Louvre Museum, Abu Dhabi
Promenade, Heritage Village, Marina Mall, Emirates Palace, Presidential
Palace, World Trade Center, etc.
Big Bus
I managed to
capture a photo of a plane flying past the mosque.
I had never seen
a mosque this huge and spectacular—this is truly a masterpiece, and admission
is free!
However, an
online reservation was required. Afterwards, everyone needed to walk through an
underground shopping mall and a long corridor to reach the entrance—another 20
minutes gone!
As with Al-Fateh Grand Mosque, proper dress code is required.
Construction of
the mosque began in 1996 and was completed in 2007, costing around USD
$545–$700 million. More than 3,000 workers and artisan firms from many
countries contributed, using extremely high-end materials. It features one of
the most impressive marble installations in the world, and the courtyard may be
the largest marble mosaic artwork on Earth.
Sheikh Zayed
Grand Mosque must be one of the most expensive and luxurious mosques in the
world, if not the number one.
The reflecting
pools surrounding the mosque are traditional features of Islamic architecture.
Ten rectangular pools, lined with blue tiles, frame the mosque. At sunset, the
columns and their reflections create one of the most picturesque scenes—but
unfortunately, I couldn't stay until sunset.
Inside the
mosque, every detail feels like a work of art—from the white marble floors that
shine like glass to the floral inlays climbing the walls. It was fascinating to
stand beneath the golden domes and crystal chandelier.
The mosque can
accommodate over 40,100 worshippers, while the main prayer hall can hold over
7,000.
The chandeliers
shown in my photo are among the largest and most intricate ever installed in a
mosque. Made of millions of Swarovski crystals and 24-carat-gold-plated copper
and brass, the mosque houses seven chandeliers in total, including three
enormous ones suspended beneath the main prayer hall’s domes.
The mosque’s
signature feature is the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. This incredible
Islamic medallion carpet was handcrafted by about 1,200 artisans from Iran. It
took around two years to complete—eight months of design, twelve months of
knotting, and the remaining time to weave nine pieces together. Covering 5,400
square meters, it is made of roughly 70% New Zealand wool and 30% cotton.
Just traveling to
and visiting the mosque took about 2.5 hours. Our next attraction was the
Emirates Palace Hotel, requiring a 30-minute Big Bus ride. The hotel, now
“Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental,” looks stunning online with very high
ratings—and a very high price (over CAD $1,000 per night).
When I got off
the bus, I was shocked by the surrounding buildings—they were incredibly tall
and massive! I took a picture comparing their height with the flagpoles.
Big
Bus
Emirates
Palace Mandarin Oriental」
The walk from the
bus stop to Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental took 10 minutes, and I began
questioning whether using a hop-on hop-off bus was a good choice.
Inside, I felt surrounded by gold—the interior design was elegant and luxurious.
Through a
beautifully designed arched window, the ocean view caught my attention. I
assumed there must be a tranquil garden by the shore.
Oh no! The next
must-visit attraction was Qasr Al Watan, and I had only 30 minutes left before
closing at 5 p.m. There was no way to make it using Big Bus. I called an Uber,
but the driver mistakenly waited for me at Qasr Al Watan—no wonder I couldn’t
find him. With only 15 minutes left, we finally took a taxi and barely made
it—arriving one minute before closing.
I thought I had
arrived at Qasr Al Watan, but actually it was just the entrance complex. The
staff were very kind—they asked me not to run and assured me they would wait
while I bought my ticket (AED 65 = CAD $25). Then I boarded a shuttle bus for a
5-minute ride to the palace itself.
Qasr Al Watan’s
courtyard is breathtaking with endless white marble, graceful arches, and a
palace view that looks like it belongs in a fairytale.
The moment I
stepped inside, I felt surrounded by beauty that was both refined and
overwhelming—like standing inside a living masterpiece.
Its Presidential
Banquet Hall has hosted numerous world leaders and high-ranking officials.
The sculpture
known as The Power of Words is a captivating installation made of
thousands of gold-plated Arabic calligraphic characters forming a sphere. It
symbolizes the idea that words, wisdom, and knowledge are the foundation of a
nation’s progress.
I spent less than
an hour inside Qasr Al Watan. By the time I came out, it was dusk.
The bus took me
back to the admission building, which is so magnificent that I originally
thought it was Qasr Al Watan.
Was it fun taking
a taxi instead of Big Bus? Not really—especially since I didn’t know where the
Big Bus stop was when leaving.
Somehow, I
managed to find the bus stop by asking people and catch the bus back. This must be the main gate
of Qasr Al Watan.
Back at Abu Dhabi Mall, Christmas decorations and “Happy Holidays” signs were displayed. Luckily, I caught the last Big Bus at 7 p.m. back to the cruise terminal.
What an adventure!
